03 June 2010, Mumbai: Bombay College of Pharmacy conducted a comparative potency structured study of three-marketed brands of L-Thyroxine tablet. The purpose was to compare and contrast the three-marketed formulations of L-Thyroxine Sodium in 100 micrograms of strength.
Thyroxine Sodium is in use since 90s but issues like lack of stability as well as potency fluctuations have been an area of major concern. This lack of stability as well as potency fluctuation is harmful for the body.
The study proved that Thyronorm, one of the 3-marketed formulations used as study sample, is the best in terms of content uniformity. This study also revealed the content uniformity variations in various brands of L-Thyroxine tablets available in the market.
L-thyroxine is a hormone which needs to be handled with full responsibility during the process of manufacturing. Since it is a potent drug and needs to be administered in few micrograms therefore even a slight variation could adversely affect the control of thyroid function.
According to The Indian Thyroid Society recent data, 4.2 crores Indians are suffering from thyroid disorders with almost 90 per cent undiagnosed. Although the reason is not understood, women are at a higher risk of most types of thyroid disease than men.
Comparative study of marketed drugs is very important to spread the awareness about the best option available in market. Propagation of such studies is important in increasing awareness among clinicians, formulators and consumers. Such comparative studies will help in designing a better formulation and clinicians in improving the understanding of various brands and thereby better management of patients.
