For those of you who don‘t know, excavators are heavy construction equipment consisting of a boom, bucket and cab on a rotating platform (sometimes referred to as a House). The rotating platform, or House, sits above an undercarriage with tracks or even wheels. The use of hydraulic fluid moves and functions the entire excavator, whether it‘s with rams or motors. It is thought that the design of an excavator is a natural progression from the steam shovel.
Excavators are used in several different ways. They could be used for digging trenches, holes or even foundations. They are also used for demolition and forestry work, as well as material handling and general grading/landscaping. Additionally, excavators come in a wide range of sizes, with the smaller ones called compact or mini excavators. These mini excavators are ideal for smaller sites with limited access or where you may need to work in a tight space. Equally, there are a variety of reasons for selecting a compact excavator over a larger one, for instance, lower purchase or renting costs, easier controls and simpler attachment, and lower maintenance costs. Some well respected brand names include Caterpillar, JCB, Hitachi, Kubota and Komatsu.
With the larger categories of excavators you get the same functions and movements as the more compact excavators but just on a much larger scale and where the access is unrestrained. However, it is worth noting that there are indeed some specialised and bespoke larger diggers, such as the long reach excavators. The name gives it a way, but these vehicles have extra long arms to enable them to fulfil tasks such as reaching to high floors on tall building sites or demolition. The old style demolition vehicles with the gigantic balls on the end of a cable are often too hazardous in terms of tearing down a building. So this is why a long reach excavator is thought to be the ideal equipment, as it is more finesse and can reach to the upper floors of buildings and dismantle them in a refined and safer manner.
For larger construction jobs such as road maintenance and road building larger excavators are used. These larger excavators are often equipped with a shovel, a hammer and other accessories and are often called dredger excavators, trench diggers and foundation excavators depending on the design.
Here at Resale Weekly, we provide advice and information on many types of excavators, including Hitachi excavators. In addition, we offer details on other construction equipment and farming machinery.
